 ARTS 211: Drawing I

This class taught me about perspective drawing, realism, accuracy, and neatness.

Still Life Drawing

The goal of this project was to realistically recreate the reference picture given in class of a bowl of pomegranates with pencils. This project taught me about the shadow mapping technique where you use trace paper to map out where highlights, shadows, and reflected lights are found in the reference and use them as a guide for proper value placement in the drawing.

Portrait  Drawing

The goal of this project was to create a Head to Shoulders portrait from an original photographic reference. The portrait is to fill the frame, display a full range of values, use directional lighting, have a minimal background, and be in black and white. While it can be difficult and tedious, I focused on being careful and exact in my measurements and drawing lines that are not supposed to be beautiful but informative.

Gesture  Drawing

The goal of this assignment was to create a gesture drawing using the three basic steps. I began with energy lines which are quickly sketched lines from top to bottom and side to side to establish sizing and placement of the form on the paper. The next step is flexible edges, which are lightly applied lines that attempt to search for the outer edge of the form. The last step is to include the punch lines. These lines are the darkest and most spontaneous lines that are drawn quickly so as to not tempt your hand to draw specific details or values.

Head

Construction Exercise

The goal of this assignment was to successfully complete the head construction drawing exercise. Using the suggested steps found in the Andrew Loomis book Successful Drawing, I practiced sketching a proportional head with Loomis’ “Ball and Plane”, method. I divided the head into vertical and horizontal “equator lines” and then included the era, nose, eyes, and mouth in the appropriate locations.

1, 2, and 3

 Point Perspective

The goal of this assignment was to create drawings in a 1-point perspective, 2-point perspective, and 3-point perspective with five boxes in each drawing. All lines are drawn straight from beginning to end with the apparent aid of a straight edge. Parallel lines are consistent throughout the drawing. Construction lines are light but visible. The outer frame of the finish box has been darkened to stand out against the construction lines. Preliminary work was kept light to ensure mistakes would erase cleanly. There is a single horizon line on each page and all boxes align to the same vanishing points.
