FACS 113:
Introduction to Design

This class taught me color theory, the elements design, principles of design, and rendering.

Value Change Project

The goal of this assignment was to demonstrate value change using the primary colors and a 3D paper medium. This assignment was a great opportunity to practice color theory. I achieved this goal by creating a red and white lotus flower out of colored printer paper that I cut into strips and then glued together.

Alphabet Project

The goal of this assignment was to create a themed collage of letters of the alphabet based on personal observations of the natural or built environment using original photography and infusing the work with pattern, texture, line, and shape. My collage achieved the element of pattern by making a grid of photographs in photoshop. I included texture through the plethora of paint stroke mediums. I used the elements of line and shape by building my collage out of squares.

Rendering Project

The goal of this project was to render two rooms parallel to one another with two different color schemes. I achieved the complimentary color scheme on the left with the colors red and green. I choose these classic holiday colors to go along with my Christmas theme. I achieved the analogous color scheme on the right with the colors blue, blue-violet, and violet. I choose these colors to replicate the cool tones that are seen on a chilly, winter evening. I also made the room's decorations mirror each other.

Exterior PhotoShop

Render (Extra Credit)

The goal of this assignment was to show photoshop skills and design an original home. I decided to create a Halloween themed house. The house has a dark and autumnal color scheme. It was a great opportunity to render the exterior of a home in PhotoShop.

Implied Line

Project

The goal of this project was to illustrate an image of an Eames molded plastic chair using only implied lines (hatch, dots, etc.). Implied lines are not contour drawings, but lines that only show the shadows and highlights. This project taught me how to utilize the elements of design and visualize objects as more than just shapes. I had to look at the chair's shadows and highlights rather than an outline to be successful.

Scale Mini-Project

Understanding how accurate renditions of scale affects interior design renderings is important. I selected a patterned fabric and accurately rendered the scale of the patterned fabric onto the second chair seen in the picture. In the first chair I enlarged the patterned fabric 2x and rendered it.
